ISES-NCC TSE 2016 Scholarship Recipient: Jennifer Wang

Recap of Experience at TSE 2016

Jennifer Wang

Jennifer Wang, ISES-NCC Member and TSE 2016 Scholarship Recipient,  Visitor Services Supervisor, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive at University of California Berkeley

Thanks to a scholarship offered by the International Special Events Society-Northern California Chapter, I attended TSE January 12-14 in Orlando, Florida.  It was my first time at TSE and it was by far an amazing educational and networking experience. It included three days packed full of educational sessions, exhibits, and special events!  The conference was the ultimate in professional development for anyone in the events industry.

I attended a variety of educational sessions on topics ranging from planning events at museums to event sponsorship, interactive meetings, food and design, event design, event trends, non-profit event planning, charging for event services, live campaigns, and ethics. The following is a list of only some of the valuable advice offered:

  • Events are an opportunity to showcase a space in a different way to increase visibility.

  • Develop relationships with vendors who might be able to help out in emergency situations.

  • Work with like-minded companies who align with what you’re doing, and know their goals.

  • Create new events within existing events to keep it fresh and incorporate a younger demographic.

  • Promote interactivity and networking, and build in downtime or breaks to allow attendees to check messages.

  • Always have a rehearsal, always have a plan B, and maintain flexibility.

  • When working with non-profits, leverage their cause to inspire involvement and attendance. Also, leverage volunteers, committees, and their resources.

  • Instead of providing information that can be looked up online, provide content that is relevant and exclusive to make the event worth attending.

  • Look for fashion and restaurant trends that will later move to event design and catering.

  • Focus on how you are different and what you do best. You’ll then become who you are at your best.

Everywhere I turned, I was surrounded by industry professionals willing to share their knowledge and offer tips. There were numerous suppliers, producers, planners, designers, and consultants; and they suggested the following resources:

  • Local business journals and Chamber of Commerce meetings

  • IEG (for sponsorship insight and trends)

  • International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) newsletter

  • Bizbash.com (for event planning news and ideas)

  • HowToFascinate.com (website for keynote speaker Sally Hogshead)

My absolute favorite parts of TSE were the Opening General Session and Michael Cerbelli’s The Hot List 2016, they both showcased upcoming trends. They described the following as exciting event trends to look forward to; interactive food stations, deconstructed food, locally sourced food & urban farms, any mini types of food, anything craft or artisan, champagne & sparkling wine, moonshine, smoked foods, Sriracha everything, ice sculptures, naked cakes, satin, metallics, mixed metals, black and white patterns, large geometric patterns, lace, ruffles, ombre, bohemian décor, vintage décor, garden themes, greenery, mobile everything, charging stations, LEDs, drone photography, mixed seating, and the Pantone colors of the year – Serenity and Rose Quartz!

Overall, the conference offered valuable information for both the emerging event coordinator and the experienced event planner. I couldn’t have been happier with my experience at TSE 2016, and I am ecstatic and extremely grateful to ISES-NCC for providing me with this opportunity. I’m no doubt a big fan, and I’m looking forward to TSE 2017 on the west coast in Long Beach, California!

With great appreciation,

Jennifer Lisa Wang, ISES-NCC Member, Visitor Services Supervisor, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive at University of California Berkeley

ISES-NCC Member Feedback Feature: Jesse Lindow – YBCA

Jesse Lindow speaking at Sept. 28th ISES-NCC education program.

2015-2016 Chapter President Elaine Jennings reached out to request feedback from all ISES-NCC members and received a response from Jesse Lindow, Senior Events Manager at YBCA. See his insights on each aspect of ISES-NCC membership below:

WHY ISES? For both personal and organizational reasons, my colleague Lisa Elliott and I decided about five years ago that the Events Dept. at YBCA needed to be present and represented in the special events community around the Bay Area. Lisa joined MPI and I joined ISES. We invite each other as guests to as many events as we can attend. I find ISES to be worth my membership dues and time, so I keep coming back every year.

BENEFITS – I benefit most by reconnecting with work peers and vendors on a casual-yet-professional basis. Being able to talk about work, life and future plans is great bonding when not done during a tense event day with the client watching. The networking puts human faces and interests behind the titles and the invoices. Being able to extend this to involve new contacts and new businesses is great, too.

INVOLVEMENT – My involvement is mostly as a standard member… attending educational events and the Gala, supporting inquiries when they come up, donating small items to auctions, and generally cheering on the leadership. Unfortunately, my work schedule (and life as a parent of two young kids) prevents me from actively taking on larger roles in committees or leadership.

COMMITMENT – The motivation to fully commit?  Love and money?!?  Seriously though, the heart of motivation to me is both my interest and dedication to the event industry. As an employee and not a business owner – plus working for a non-profit – my commitment mostly is mostly limited to membership and chapter support, not hosting or leadership.
